Moving on Music presents Andy Sheppard Quartet, as they embark on their Ireland wide ‘Surrounded by Sea’ tour.
International jazz star, ECM recording artist and Bristol resident Andy Sheppard is one of few British musicians to have made a significant impact on the international jazz scene, playing and writing for solo, big band, and chamber orchestra. A serial collaborator, Andy has worked with some of the biggest names in jazz and is in huge demand for both his composing and for his legendary live performances.
The newest record ‘Surrounded by Sea’ (ECM) has emerged from the widely-praised ‘Trio Libero’ project with previous collaborators Michel Benita (bass) and Polar Bear rhythm master Seb Rochford (drums) once again joining Sheppard. The addition of guitarist and electronic artist Eivind Aarset adds a backdrop of ambient drones and electronic textures, giving Sheppard and co more space to explore. The end product includes new compositions, open improvisations, an Elvis Costello tune, and the Gaelic traditional ballad “Aoidh, Na Dean Cadal Idir” which appears in three variations as a thematic thread through the album.
The band creates music that is both ethereal and grounded. Each member of the quartet is a master in their own right, but together they deliver a performance built on subtlety, groove, control, and a deep understanding of one another.
