Limerick Jazz Announces Autumn 2013 Season
Limerick Jazz is delighted to bring another outstanding season of jazz performances to the city this autumn. Once again the centerpiece will be Limerick Jazz Festival.
This year’s festival will take place September 26th – 29th and will feature top Irish and international artists. From Ireland, Louis Stewart and Jim Doherty will perform material from their new CD Tunes, and the Crisis Point Big Band will be joined by special guests including Nigel Mooney and brilliant young guitarist Andreas Varady who spent the summer on tour with Quincy Jones.
In the year of the Gathering Limerick Jazz Festival’s international visitors have strong Irish connections. Irish-born and British-based, award-winning vocalist Christine Tobin and her trio will perform the songs of Leonard Cohen. Saxophone player Larry McKenna is visiting Ireland for the first time along with fellow-Philadelphian, vibraphonist Tony Miceli. Larry is a living legend of the Philadelphia jazz scene, and has played with greats such as Woody Herman and Frank Sinatra.
We are also two concerts in co-operation with Music Network. On September 19th we welcome songwriter and improviser Lauren Kinsella, leading her award-winning group Thought-Fox in a new project with the acclaimed saxophonist Julian Siegel. One of the most highly regarded and in demand saxophonists on the UK and European jazz scene, Siegel brings an exciting new dimension and texture to the Thought-Fox sound.
October 24th sees the visit of an extraordinary Colombian musician. Edmar Castañeda. Edmar Castañeda has been described by the legendary Paquito D’Rivera as “an enormous talent. With his versatility and enchanting charisma, he has taken his harp out of the shadows, and become one of the most original musicians in the Big Apple.” Technically astounding, dazzling yet lush, muscular yet lyrical, Castañeda has single-handedly transformed the arpa llanera, or Colombian harp, into one serious jazz instrument.
